Career and life
Pharrell Lanscilo Williams(born April 5, 1973) is an American singer, a rapper, and a record producer.
Williams and Chad Hugo make up the record production duo the Neptunes, producing soul, hip hop and R&B music. He is the lead vocalist and drummer of rock, funk, and hip hop band N*E*R*D, that he formed with Hugo and childhood friend, Shay Haley. He released his first single, "Frontin'", in 2003 and followed up with his debut solo album, In My Mind in 2006.His second album, Girl, was released on March 3, 2014. This album was preceded by the commercially successful single, "Happy". As part of the Neptunes, Williams has produced numerous hit singles for various recording artists.
Williams owns a media venture that encompasses entertainment, music, fashion, and art called i am OTHER, a multimedia creative collective and record label that serves as an umbrella for all of Pharrell Williams' endeavors, including Billionaire Boys Club and Ice Cream apparel, Billionaire Girls Club, textile company Bionic Yarn and a dedicated YouTube channel. The channel was launched on May 12, 2012 as part of YouTube's $100 million original channel initiative.
Williams has earned ten Grammy Awards including two with the Neptunes.
In March 2013, Robin Thicke's hit single "Blurred Lines" - written and produced by Williams - was released. The song was a worldwide hit, peaking at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and reaching number one in 13 more countries including the United Kingdom and Germany. It was Williams's third Billboard Hot 100 number one single.
It was announced in December 2013 that Williams had been nominated for seven Grammy Awards, including Producer of the Year. In the same month, a press release from Columbia Records announced that Williams had signed a contract with the label and would be releasing an album in 2014, entitled Girl, featuring the single "Happy" from the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack.
On February 18, Williams announced via Twitter that his second album, Girl would be released on March 3, 2014.At the 86th Academy Awards on March 2, 2014, Williams's song "Happy" lost to "Let It Go" from Frozen. 
On March 31, 2014, Williams was announced as a new coach for the seventh season of The Voice, replacing CeeLo Green. Williams was the executive producer of Atlanta rapper T.I.'s ninth studio album, Paperwork, which was released on October 21, 2014 by Grand Hustle and Columbia Records.
In January 2015, Williams and Al Gore announced that they are teaming up to create a 7-continent "Live Earth" concert on June 18 to raise awareness about and pressure governments to act on climate change. He is the musical director. On February 8, 2015, Williams made a cameo in an episode of The Simpsons entitled "Walking Big & Tall" where he comes to Springfield to write a new anthem for the town.In October 2015, the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University named Williams as their artist-in-residence.Also in October 2015, Williams announced that he will perform with a gospel choir on Sunday, November 1, at Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, where nine black parishioners were shot and killed on June 17, allegedly by a young white man who is awaiting trial. The two-hour Shining a Light: A Concert for Progress on Race in America program is scheduled to air November 20, and will also feature a concert to be filmed November 18 in Los Angeles. A goal of the program is to raise money for the victims of racial violence and for organizations around the country working to promote racial equity.
He presented the 58th Grammy Awards ceremony and the 88th Oscar Award ceremony on February 2016.
