Cachao
by Sandra BrennanCuban bassist Cachao is credited as the man who created mambo music. He spent most of his 76 years living in Cuba, where he was a prominent jazz sideman who specialized in Afro-Cuban dance music. He eventually made it to the U.S. and lived in Miami for almost nine years with little or no recognition, due in part to his extreme modesty. He was first introduced to the world by actor/filmmaker Andy Garcia, who was born in Cuba but raised in Miami, via his 1993 ary Cachao...Como Su Ritmo No Hay Dos. The film earned glowing reviews, especially for the music. On January 16, 1993, Cachao played a sold-out Radio City Music Hall in New York to considerable acclaim. In March of 1995, Cachao earned a Grammy for his album Master Sessions, Vol. 1.
