GRiZ
GRiZ is an up and coming 21 year old from the Motor City, and quite frankly, he’s been creating some of the best funky dubstep i’ve heard. Imagine taking the soulful grooves of Pretty Lights, the smooth synths of Minnesota, and the glitchy bangin’ sounds of Skrillex, grind them all up and add a dash of FUNK…. You’ve got sir GRiZ. This is evident in his early track Ill Type Moves. The song very much reminds me of Pretty Lights early style, and I really enjoyed listening to the track again. Next up is a really well done remix of Aerosmith’s hit from 1973: Dream On. I am reminded of Minnesota’s Mama’s and Papa’s remix when I listen, the cut in-n-out style seems to work really well with these old classics. But enough with the history, lets get to the new album. “Mad Liberation” came out last week, and GRiZ being the baller he is, gives it all up for free on his website here. I listened to the whole album in hopes of picking out a favorite to discuss here. Problem: the whole thing is awesome. Solution: listen to it. now. It is rare to see an EDM artist, especially one so young, develop a full length album. I draw another parallel to Pretty Lights here, as Derek did this as well. If I absolutely HAD to pick a favorite…. it would be the second track, Smash the Funk. The old-school hip hop samples, skrilly sirens, and soulful groove combine for an epic track. Lastly, feel free to listen to all the tracks off “Mad Liberation,” the entire album is included at the bottom. I love this guys music, and can’t wait to see him up at Red Rocks with Big Gigantic and Dillon Francis.
